A user could specify the same directory scope to set_property()
multiple times, which in conjunction with APPEND would append the
property multiple times.
Make sure to deduplicate scopes across both DIRECTORY and
TARGET_DIRECTORY options, so that a property is only appended
once in such a scenario.

Both set_source_files_properties() and set_property(SOURCE) now accept
two new optional arguments: DIRECTORY and TARGET_DIRECTORY.
The DIRECTORY option takes a list of relative or absolute paths
pointing to processed source directories (add_subdirectory was
already called on them).
These paths specify directory scopes where the source file properties
will be set. Previously the scope was always the currently processed
source directory.
Similarly TARGET_DIRECTORY takes a list of targets, whose source
directories will be used as the list of scopes where to set the
source file properties.
get_property() and get_source_file_property() also get the same
new arguments, except only one value can be specified instead
of a list.

Ancient versions of CMake required else(), endif(), and similar block
termination commands to have arguments matching the command starting the
block. This is no longer the preferred style.

Our Git commit hooks disallow modification or addition of lines with
trailing whitespace. Wipe out all remnants of trailing whitespace
everywhere except third-party code.

set_property() has APPEND, which creates a list. E.g. when
appending to COMPILE_FLAGS a string is needed, not a list.
With the APPEND_STRING option the value is append as string,
not as list.

The STRINGS property tells cmake-gui to create a drop-down selection
list. This teaches the Properties test to set and verify its value.

This adds the CACHE option to set_property and get_property commands.
This allows full control over cache entry information, so advanced users
can tweak their project cache as desired. The set_property command
allows only pre-defined CACHE properties to be set since others would
not persist anyway.
