* Issue #19932: Fix typo in import.h, missing whitespaces in function prototypes.Victor Stinner2013-12-101-4/+4

* Issue #15610: The PyImport_ImportModuleEx macro now callsBrett Cannon2012-08-101-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | PyImport_ImportModuleLevel() with a 'level' of 0 instead of -1 as the latter is no longer a valid value. Also added a versionchanged note for PyImport_ImportModuleLevel() just in case people don't make the connection between changes to __import__() and this C function.
* Issue #2377: Make importlib the implementation of __import__().Brett Cannon2012-04-141-0/+3
| | | | | | | importlib._bootstrap is now frozen into Python/importlib.h and stored as _frozen_importlib in sys.modules. Py_Initialize() loads the frozen code along with sys and imp and then uses _frozen_importlib._install() to set builtins.__import__() w/ _frozen_importlib.__import__().
* make PyImport_ImportModuleLevel's first arg const like similiar functions ↵Benjamin Peterson2011-05-251-1/+1
| | | | (closes #12173)
* Issue #3080: Add PyImport_ImportModuleLevelObject() functionVictor Stinner2011-03-141-0/+7
| | | | Use it for the builtin __import__ function.
* Issue #3080: Document the name attribute of the _inittab structureVictor Stinner2011-03-071-1/+1
| | | | The name is an ASCII encoded string.
* Issue #3080: Import builtins using Unicode stringsVictor Stinner2011-03-071-2/+2
| | | | | | | - is_builtin(), init_builtin(), load_builtin() and other builtin related functions use Unicode strings, instead of byte strings - Rename _PyImport_FixupExtensionUnicode() to _PyImport_FixupExtensionObject() - Rename _PyImport_FindExtensionUnicode() to _PyImport_FindExtensionObject()
* Issue #3080: Add PyImport_ImportFrozenModuleObject()Victor Stinner2011-03-201-0/+3
| | | | | find_frozen(), get_frozen_object(), is_frozen_package() and other functions related to frozen modules use Unicode strings instead of byte strings.
* Issue #3080: Add PyImport_AddModuleObject() and PyImport_ExecCodeModuleObject()Victor Stinner2011-03-041-0/+9
|
* Issue #3080: Mark _PyImport_FindBuiltin() argument as constantVictor Stinner2011-02-231-2/+2
| | | | | | And as a consequence, mark also name argument of _PyImport_FindExtensionUnicode() constant too. But I plan to change this argument type to PyObject* later.
* Issue #3080: document encoding used by import functionsVictor Stinner2011-02-221-14/+45

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | svn+ssh://pythondev@svn.python.org/python/trunk ........ r74841 | thomas.wouters | 2009-09-16 14:55:54 -0500 (Wed, 16 Sep 2009) | 23 lines Fix issue #1590864, multiple threads and fork() can cause deadlocks, by acquiring the import lock around fork() calls. This prevents other threads from having that lock while the fork happens, and is the recommended way of dealing with such issues. There are two other locks we care about, the GIL and the Thread Local Storage lock. The GIL is obviously held when calling Python functions like os.fork(), and the TLS lock is explicitly reallocated instead, while also deleting now-orphaned TLS data. This only fixes calls to os.fork(), not extension modules or embedding programs calling C's fork() directly. Solving that requires a new set of API functions, and possibly a rewrite of the Python/thread_*.c mess. Add a warning explaining the problem to the documentation in the mean time. This also changes behaviour a little on AIX. Before, AIX (but only AIX) was getting the import lock reallocated, seemingly to avoid this very same problem. This is not the right approach, because the import lock is a re-entrant one, and reallocating would do the wrong thing when forking while holding the import lock. Will backport to 2.6, minus the tiny AIX behaviour change. ........

Plug some theoretical insecurities in the test script: - Verify that the SIGALRM handler was actually installed. - Don't call alarm() before the handler is installed. - Move everything that can fail inside the try/finally, so the test cleans up after itself more often. - Try sending all the expected signals in force_test_exit(), not just SIGALRM. Since that was fixed to actually send SIGALRM (instead of invisibly dying with an AttributeError), we've seen that sending SIGALRM alone does not stop this from hanging. - Move the "kill the child" business into the finally clause, so the child doesn't survive test failure to send SIGALRM to other tests later (there are also baffling SIGALRM-related failures in test_socket). - Cancel the alarm in the finally clause -- if the test dies early, we again don't want SIGALRM showing up to confuse a later test. Alas, this still relies on timing luck wrt the spawned script that sends the test signals, but it's hard to see how waiting for seconds can so often be so unlucky. test_threadedsignals: curiously, this test never fails on Tru64, but doesn't normally signal SIGALRM. Anyway, fixed an obvious (but probably inconsequential) logic error. ........ r51234 | tim.peters | 2006-08-12 07:17:41 +0200 (Sat, 12 Aug 2006) | 8 lines Ah, fudge. * SF patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports.Thomas Wouters2006-02-281-0/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | - IMPORT_NAME takes an extra argument from the stack: the relativeness of the import. Only passed to __import__ when it's not -1. - __import__() takes an optional 5th argument for the same thing; it __defaults to -1 (old semantics: try relative, then absolute) - 'from . import name' imports name (be it module or regular attribute) from the current module's *package*. Likewise, 'from .module import name' will import name from a sibling to the current module. - Importing from outside a package is not allowed; 'from . import sys' in a toplevel module will not work, nor will 'from .. import sys' in a (single-level) package. - 'from __future__ import absolute_import' will turn on the new semantics for import and from-import: imports will be absolute, except for from-import with dots. Includes tests for regular imports and importhooks, parser changes and a NEWS item, but no compiler-package changes or documentation changes.
* Add const to several API functions that take char *.Jeremy Hylton2005-12-101-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | In C++, it's an error to pass a string literal to a char* function without a const_cast(). Rather than require every C++ extension module to put a cast around string literals, fix the API to state the const-ness. I focused on parts of the API where people usually pass literals: PyArg_ParseTuple() and friends, Py_BuildValue(), PyMethodDef, the type slots, etc. Predictably, there were a large set of functions that needed to be fixed as a result of these changes. The most pervasive change was to make the keyword args list passed to PyArg_ParseTupleAndKewords() to be a const char *kwlist[]. One cast was required as a result of the changes: A type object mallocs the memory for its tp_doc slot and later frees it. PyTypeObject says that tp_doc is const char *; but if the type was created by type_new(), we know it is safe to cast to char *.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Introduce truly separate (sub)interpreter objects. For now, these must be used by separate threads, created from C. See Demo/pysvr for an example of how to use this. This also rationalizes Python's initialization and finalization behavior: Py_Initialize() -- initialize the whole interpreter Py_Finalize() -- finalize the whole interpreter tstate = Py_NewInterpreter() -- create a new (sub)interpreter Py_EndInterpreter(tstate) -- delete a new (sub)interpreter There are also new interfaces relating to threads and the interpreter lock, which can be used to create new threads, and sometimes have to be used to manipulate the interpreter lock when creating or deleting sub-interpreters. These are only defined when WITH_THREAD is defined: PyEval_AcquireLock() -- acquire the interpreter lock PyEval_ReleaseLock() -- release the interpreter lock PyEval_AcquireThread(tstate) -- acquire the lock and make the thread current PyEval_ReleaseThread(tstate) -- release the lock and make NULL current Other administrative changes: - The header file bltinmodule.h is deleted. - The init functions for Import, Sys and Builtin are now internal and declared in pythonrun.h. - Py_Setup() and Py_Cleanup() are no longer declared. - The interpreter state and thread state structures are now linked together in a chain (the chain of interpreters is a static variable in pythonrun.c). - Some members of the interpreter and thread structures have new, shorter, more consistent, names. - Added declarations for _PyImport_{Find,Fixup}Extension() to import.h.
