* Patch# 1258 by Christian Heimes: kill basestring.Guido van Rossum2007-10-161-1/+0
| | | | I like this because it makes the code shorter! :-)
* For PEP3137: Adds missing methods to the mutable PyBytes object (soonGregory P. Smith2007-10-161-0/+84
| | | | | | | | to be called a buffer). Shares code with stringobject when possible. Adds unit tests with common code that should be usable to test the PEPs mutable buffer() and immutable bytes() types. http://bugs.python.org/issue1261
* Patch #1272, by Christian Heimes and Alexandre Vassalotti.Guido van Rossum2007-10-152-2/+18
| | | | | | | | | | Changes to make __file__ a proper Unicode object, using the default filesystem encoding. This is a bit tricky because the default filesystem encoding isn't set by the time we import the first modules; at that point we fudge things a bit. This is okay since __file__ isn't really used much except for error reporting. Tested on OSX and Linux only so far.

* Fix problems with memoryview object. There is still more to do to finish ↵Travis E. Oliphant2007-10-122-35/+42
| | | | PEP 3118. The memory-view object needs to be fleshed out and the struct module needs to be modified.
* Delete bufferobject.[ch].Guido van Rossum2007-10-082-34/+0

* Rip out the file object's implementation.Guido van Rossum2007-06-122-45/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | Fixed test_import.py while I was at it. However, there's still a problem in import.c -- get_file() can leak a FILE struct (not a file descriptor though). I'm not sure how to fix this; closing the FILE* closes the file descriptor, and that's the wrong thing to do when there's still a Python file object keeping the file descriptor open. I also would rather not mess with dup(), as it won't port to Windows.
* Make identifiers str (not str8) objects throughout.Martin v. Löwis2007-06-104-7/+50
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This affects the parser, various object implementations, and all places that put identifiers into C string literals. In testing, a number of crashes occurred as code would fail when the recursion limit was reached (such as the Unicode interning dictionary having key/value pairs where key is not value). To solve these, I added an overflowed flag, which allows for 50 more recursions after the limit was reached and the exception was raised, and a recursion_critical flag, which indicates that recursion absolutely must be allowed, i.e. that a certain call must not cause a stack overflow exception. There are still some places where both str and str8 are accepted as identifiers; these should eventually be removed.
