Issue #1798: Add ctypes calling convention that allows safe access of errno.
ctypes maintains thread-local storage that has space for two error
numbers: private copies of the system 'errno' value and, on Windows,
the system error code accessed by the GetLastError() and
SetLastError() api functions.
Foreign functions created with CDLL(..., use_errno=True), when called,
swap the system 'errno' value with the private copy just before the
actual function call, and swapped again immediately afterwards. The
'use_errno' parameter defaults to False, in this case 'ctypes_errno'
is not touched.
On Windows, foreign functions created with CDLL(...,
use_last_error=True) or WinDLL(..., use_last_error=True) swap the
system LastError value with the ctypes private copy.
The values are also swapped immeditately before and after ctypes
callback functions are called, if the callbacks are constructed using
the new optional use_errno parameter set to True: CFUNCTYPE(...,
use_errno=TRUE) or WINFUNCTYPE(..., use_errno=True).
New ctypes functions are provided to access the ctypes private copies
from Python:
- ctypes.set_errno(value) and ctypes.set_last_error(value) store
'value' in the private copy and returns the previous value.
- ctypes.get_errno() and ctypes.get_last_error() returns the current
ctypes private copies value.

test_math and test_cmath are failing on the FreeBSD 6.2 trunk buildbot,
apparently because tanh(-0.) loses the sign of zero on that platform.
If true, this is a bug in FreeBSD.
Added a configure test to verify this. I still need to figure out
how best to deal with this failure.

Issue 2665: On Windows, sys.stderr does not contain a valid file when running without a console.
It seems to work, but will fail at the first flush.

This should fix issue2632. A long description of the two competing
problems is in the bug report (one old, one recently introduced trying
to fix the old one). In short:
buffer data during socket._fileobject.read() and readlines() within a
cStringIO object instead of a [] of str()s returned from the recv()
call.
This prevents excessive memory use due to the size parameter being
passed to recv() being grossly larger than the actual size of the data
returned *and* prevents excessive cpu usage due to looping in python
calling recv() with a very tiny size value if min() is used as the
previous memory-use bug "fix" did.
It also documents what the socket._fileobject._rbufsize member is
actually used for.
This is a candidate for back porting to 2.5.

In test_io, StatefulIncrementalDecoderTest was not part of the test suite.
And of course, the test failed:
a bytearray was used without reason in io.TextIOWrapper.tell().
The difference is that iterating over bytes (i.e. str in python2.6) returns 1-char bytes,
whereas bytearrays yield integers.
This code should still work with python3.0

branch. The most obvious changes:
- str8 renamed to bytes (PyString at the C level);
- bytes renamed to buffer (PyBytes at the C level);
- PyString and PyUnicode are no longer compatible.
I.e. we now have an immutable bytes type and a mutable bytes type.
The behavior of PyString was modified quite a bit, to make it more

tuple.__repr__ did not consider a reference loop as it is not possible from
Python code; but it is possible from C. object.__str__ had the issue of not
expecting a type to doing something within it's tp_str implementation that
could trigger an infinite recursion, but it could in C code.. Both found
thanks to BaseException and how it handles its repr.
Closes issue #1686386. Thanks to Thomas Herve for taking an initial stab at
coming up with a solution.

Made the various is_* operations return booleans. This was discussed
with Cawlishaw by mail, and he basically confirmed that to these is_*
operations, there's no need to return Decimal(0) and Decimal(1) if
the language supports the False and True booleans.
Also added a few tests for the these functions in extra.decTest, since
they are mostly untested (apart from the doctests).

Here's a patch which addresses this. It also fixes the indentation in
PySSL_SetError, bringing it into line with PEP 7, fixes a compile warning
about one of the OpenSSL macros, and makes the namespace a bit more
consistent. I've tested it on FC 7 and OS X 10.4.

Improve extended slicing support in builtin types and classes. Specifically:
- Specialcase extended slices that amount to a shallow copy the same way as
is done for simple slices, in the tuple, string and unicode case.
- Specialcase step-1 extended slices to optimize the common case for all
involved types.
- For lists, allow extended slice assignment of differing lengths as long
as the step is 1. (Previously, 'l[:2:1] = []' failed even though
'l[:2] = []' and 'l[:2:None] = []' do not.)
- Implement extended slicing for buffer, array, structseq, mmap and
UserString.UserString.
- Implement slice-object support (but not non-step-1 slice assignment) for
UserString.MutableString.
- Add tests for all new functionality.

Completely get rid of StringIO.py and cStringIO.c.
I had to fix a few tests and modules beyond what Christian did, and
invent a few conventions. E.g. in elementtree, I chose to
write/return Unicode strings whe no encoding is given, but bytes when
an explicit encoding is given. Also mimetools was made to always
assume binary files.

The problem is that ctypes c_char (and c_char_p) creates unicode string
instead of byte string. I attached a proposition (patch) to change this
behaviour (use bytes for c_char).
So in next example, it will display 'bytes' and not 'str':
from ctypes import c_buffer, c_char
buf = c_buffer("abcdef")
print (type(buf[0]))
Other behaviour changes:
- repr(c_char) adds a "b"
eg. repr(c_char('x')) is "c_char(b'x')" instead of "c_char('x')"
- bytes is mutable whereas str is not:
this may break some modules based on ctypes

In response to this SF bug:
[ 1752723 ] email.message_from_string: initial line gets discarded
I added a test to assert that when the first line of text passed to
message_from_string() contains a leading space, the message ends up with the
appropriate FirstHeaderLineIsContinuationDefect on its defects list.
The bug is invalid.

Avoid exception if there's a stray directory inside a Maildir folder.
The Maildir specification doesn't seem to say anything about this
situation, and it can happen if you're keeping a Maildir mailbox in
Subversion (.svn directories) or some similar system. The patch just
ignores directories in the cur/, new/, tmp/ folders.
