No detailed change log; just check out the change log for the py3k-pep3137
branch. The most obvious changes:
- str8 renamed to bytes (PyString at the C level);
- bytes renamed to buffer (PyBytes at the C level);
- PyString and PyUnicode are no longer compatible.
I.e. we now have an immutable bytes type and a mutable bytes type.
The behavior of PyString was modified quite a bit, to make it more
bytes-like. Some changes are still on the to-do list.

Backout the original 'fix' to 1721309 which had no effect.
Different versions of Berkeley DB handle this differently.
The comments and bug report should have the details. Memory is allocated
in 4.4 (and presumably earlier), but not in 4.5. Thus
4.5 has the free error, but not earlier versions.
Mostly update comments, plus make the free conditional.
This fix was already applied to the 2.5 branch.

Make _strptime.TimeRE().pattern() use ``\s+`` for matching whitespace instead

The dict views aren't fully functional yet; in particular, they can't
be compared to sets yet. but they are useful as "iterator wells".
There are still 27 failing unit tests; I expect that many of these

Fix time.strptime's %U support. Basically rewrote the algorithm to be more
generic so that one only has to shift certain values based on whether the week
was specified to start on Monday or Sunday. Cut out a lot of edge case code
compared to the previous version. Also broke algorithm out into its own
function (that is private to the module).

No more raising of string exceptions!
The next step of PEP 352 (for 2.6) causes raising a string exception to trigger
a TypeError. Trying to catch a string exception raises a DeprecationWarning.
References to string exceptions has been removed from the docs since they are
now just an error.

[Bug #1613651] Document socket.recv_into, socket.recvfrom_into
Also, the text for recvfrom told you to read recv() for an explanation of the
'flags' argument, but recv() just pointed you at the man page. Copied the
man-page text to recvfrom(), recvfrom_into, recv_into to avoid the pointless
redirection.

[Apply length-checking.diff from bug #1599254]
Add length checking to single-file mailbox formats: before doing a
flush() on a mailbox, seek to the end and verify its length is
unchanged, raising ExternalClashError if the file's length has
changed.
This fix avoids potential data loss if some other process appends to
the mailbox file after the table of contents has been generated;
instead of overwriting the modified file, you'll get the exception.
I also noticed that the self._lookup() call in self.flush() wasn't
necessary (everything that sets self._pending to True also calls
self.lookup()), and replaced it by an assertion.

databases are associated with corruption problems, so I studied this code
carefully and ran some brutal stress tests. I didn't find any bugs,
although it's unclear whether this code *intends* that __setitem__ can
leave the directory file out of synch with the data file (so
if a dumbdbm isn't properly closed, and the value of an existing key
was ever replaced, corruption is almost certain, where "corruption"
means the directory file is out of synch with the data file).
Added many comments and generally modernized the code. Examples of the
latter: we have better ways of reading a whole file line-by-line now;
eval() now tolerates a trailing newline; the %r format code can be used
to avoid explicit repr/backtick calls; and the code often broke tuples
into their components when it was clearer and faster to just leave them
as tuples.

Make dumbdbm merely "dumb", rather than "terminally broken". Without this

There is a silly bug in the fall-back dumbdbm.py database package in
the Python 1.5.2 standard distro. This bug causes any changes to an
existing item to generate a new key, even when the key already
exists. After many updates, the .dir file used by dumbdbm grows to
a huge size, and can cause filesystem problems.
