* gh-116322: Add Py_mod_gil module slot (#116882)Brett Simmers2024-05-031-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | This PR adds the ability to enable the GIL if it was disabled at interpreter startup, and modifies the multi-phase module initialization path to enable the GIL when loading a module, unless that module's spec includes a slot indicating it can run safely without the GIL. PEP 703 called the constant for the slot `Py_mod_gil_not_used`; I went with `Py_MOD_GIL_NOT_USED` for consistency with gh-104148. A warning will be issued up to once per interpreter for the first GIL-using module that is loaded. If `-v` is given, a shorter message will be printed to stderr every time a GIL-using module is loaded (including the first one that issues a warning).
* gh-110850: Use public PyTime functions (#115746)Victor Stinner2024-02-201-6/+12
| | | | | Replace private _PyTime functions with public PyTime functions. random_seed_time_pid() now reports errors to its caller.
* gh-110850: Rename internal PyTime C API functions (#115734)Victor Stinner2024-02-201-3/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Rename functions: * _PyTime_GetSystemClock() => _PyTime_TimeUnchecked() * _PyTime_GetPerfCounter() => _PyTime_PerfCounterUnchecked() * _PyTime_GetMonotonicClock() => _PyTime_MonotonicUnchecked() * _PyTime_GetSystemClockWithInfo() => _PyTime_TimeWithInfo() * _PyTime_GetMonotonicClockWithInfo() => _PyTime_MonotonicWithInfo() * _PyTime_GetMonotonicClockWithInfo() => _PyTime_MonotonicWithInfo() Changes: * Remove "typedef PyTime_t PyTime_t;" which was "typedef PyTime_t _PyTime_t;" before a previous rename. * Update comments of "Unchecked" functions. * Remove invalid PyTime_Time() comment.
* gh-110850: Cleanup pycore_time.h includes (#115724)Victor Stinner2024-02-201-0/+1
| | | | | <pycore_time.h> include is no longer needed to get the PyTime_t type in internal header files. This type is now provided by <Python.h> include. Add <pycore_time.h> includes to C files instead.

| | | | | | | | * gh-106320: Re-add _PyLong_FromByteArray(), _PyLong_AsByteArray() and _PyLong_GCD() to the public header files since they are used by third-party packages and there is no efficient replacement. See https://github.com/python/cpython/issues/111140 See https://github.com/python/cpython/issues/111139 * gh-111262: Re-add _PyDict_Pop() to have a C-API until a new public one is designed.
* gh-110964: Remove private _PyArg functions (#110966)Victor Stinner2023-10-171-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Move the following private functions and structures to pycore_modsupport.h internal C API: * _PyArg_BadArgument() * _PyArg_CheckPositional() * _PyArg_NoKeywords() * _PyArg_NoPositional() * _PyArg_ParseStack() * _PyArg_ParseStackAndKeywords() * _PyArg_Parser structure * _PyArg_UnpackKeywords() * _PyArg_UnpackKeywordsWithVararg() * _PyArg_UnpackStack() * _Py_ANY_VARARGS() Changes: * Python/getargs.h now includes pycore_modsupport.h to export functions. * clinic.py now adds pycore_modsupport.h when one of these functions is used. * Add pycore_modsupport.h includes when a C extension uses one of these functions. * Define Py_BUILD_CORE_MODULE in C extensions which now include directly or indirectly (via code generated by Argument Clinic) pycore_modsupport.h: * _csv * _curses_panel * _dbm * _gdbm * _multiprocessing.posixshmem * _sqlite.row * _statistics * grp * resource * syslog * _testcapi: bad_get() no longer uses METH_FASTCALL calling convention but METH_VARARGS. Replace _PyArg_UnpackStack() with PyArg_ParseTuple(). * _testcapi: add PYTESTCAPI_NEED_INTERNAL_API macro which is defined by _testcapi sub-modules which need the internal C API (pycore_modsupport.h): exceptions.c, float.c, vectorcall.c, watchers.c. * Remove Include/cpython/modsupport.h header file. Include/modsupport.h no longer includes the removed header file. * Fix mypy clinic.py
* gh-110014: Include explicitly <unistd.h> header (#110155)Victor Stinner2023-09-301-2/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | * Remove unused <locale.h> includes. * Remove unused <fcntl.h> include in traceback.h. * Remove redundant <assert.h> and <stddef.h> includes. They are already included by "Python.h". * Remove <object.h> include in faulthandler.c. Python.h already includes it. * Add missing <stdbool.h> in pycore_pythread.h if HAVE_PTHREAD_STUBS is defined. * Fix also warnings in pthread_stubs.h: don't redefine macros if they are already defined, like the __NEED_pthread_t macro.
* gh-106320: Remove private PyLong C API functions (#108429)Victor Stinner2023-08-241-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Remove private PyLong C API functions: * _PyLong_AsByteArray() * _PyLong_DivmodNear() * _PyLong_Format() * _PyLong_Frexp() * _PyLong_FromByteArray() * _PyLong_FromBytes() * _PyLong_GCD() * _PyLong_Lshift() * _PyLong_Rshift() Move these functions to the internal C API. No longer export _PyLong_FromBytes() function.
* gh-106320: Remove private pylifecycle.h functions (#106400)Victor Stinner2023-07-041-0/+1
| | | | | | | Remove private pylifecycle.h functions: move them to the internal C API ( pycore_atexit.h, pycore_pylifecycle.h and pycore_signal.h). No longer export most of these functions. Move _testcapi.test_atexit() to _testinternalcapi.
* gh-99113: Add Py_MOD_PER_INTERPRETER_GIL_SUPPORTED (gh-104205)Eric Snow2023-05-051-0/+1
| | | Here we are doing no more than adding the value for Py_mod_multiple_interpreters and using it for stdlib modules. We will start checking for it in gh-104206 (once PyInterpreterState.ceval.own_gil is added in gh-104204).
* gh-102255: Improve build support for Windows API partitions (GH-102256)Max Bachmann2023-03-091-1/+5
| | | | | Add `MS_WINDOWS_DESKTOP`, `MS_WINDOWS_APPS`, `MS_WINDOWS_SYSTEM` and `MS_WINDOWS_GAMES` preprocessor definitions to allow switching off functionality missing from particular API partitions ("partitions" are used in Windows to identify overlapping subsets of APIs). CPython only officially supports `MS_WINDOWS_DESKTOP` and `MS_WINDOWS_SYSTEM` (APPS is included by normal desktop builds, but APPS without DESKTOP is not covered). Other configurations are a convenience for people building their own runtimes. `MS_WINDOWS_GAMES` is for the Xbox subset of the Windows API, which is also available on client OS, but is restricted compared to `MS_WINDOWS_DESKTOP`. These restrictions may change over time, as they relate to the build headers rather than the OS support, and so we assume that Xbox builds will use the latest available version of the GDK.

* gh-90928: Statically Initialize the Keywords Tuple in Clinic-Generated Code ↵Eric Snow2022-08-111-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | (gh-95860) We only statically initialize for core code and builtin modules. Extension modules still create the tuple at runtime. We'll solve that part of interpreter isolation separately. This change includes generated code. The non-generated changes are in: * Tools/clinic/clinic.py * Python/getargs.c * Include/cpython/modsupport.h * Makefile.pre.in (re-generate global strings after running clinic) * very minor tweaks to Modules/_codecsmodule.c and Python/Python-tokenize.c All other changes are generated code (clinic, global strings).

* bpo-43974: Move Py_BUILD_CORE_MODULE into module code (GH-29157)Christian Heimes2021-10-221-0/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | setup.py no longer defines Py_BUILD_CORE_MODULE. Instead every module defines the macro before #include "Python.h" unless Py_BUILD_CORE_BUILTIN is already defined. Py_BUILD_CORE_BUILTIN is defined for every module that is built by Modules/Setup. The PR also simplifies Modules/Setup. Makefile and makesetup already define Py_BUILD_CORE_BUILTIN and include Modules/internal for us. Signed-off-by: Christian Heimes <christian@python.org>
* bpo-43413: Fix handling keyword arguments in subclasses of some buitin ↵Serhiy Storchaka2021-09-121-2/+3
| | | | | | | | classes (GH-26456) * Constructors of subclasses of some buitin classes (e.g. tuple, list, frozenset) no longer accept arbitrary keyword arguments. * Subclass of set can now define a __new__() method with additional keyword parameters without overriding also __init__().

* bpo-40137: Add pycore_moduleobject.h internal header (GH-25507)Victor Stinner2021-04-211-2/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add pycore_moduleobject.h internal header file with static inline functions to access module members: * _PyModule_GetDict() * _PyModule_GetDef() * _PyModule_GetState() These functions don't check at runtime if their argument has a valid type and can be inlined even if Python is not built with LTO. _PyType_GetModuleByDef() uses _PyModule_GetDef(). Replace PyModule_GetState() with _PyModule_GetState() in the extension modules, considered as performance sensitive: * _abc * _functools * _operator * _pickle * _queue * _random * _sre * _struct * _thread * _winapi * array * posix The following extensions are now built with the Py_BUILD_CORE_MODULE macro defined, to be able to use the internal pycore_moduleobject.h header: _abc, array, _operator, _queue, _sre, _struct.

* bpo-40286: Add randbytes() method to random.Random (GH-19527)Victor Stinner2020-04-171-7/+58
| | | | | | | | | | | | Add random.randbytes() function and random.Random.randbytes() method to generate random bytes. Modify secrets.token_bytes() to use SystemRandom.randbytes() rather than calling directly os.urandom(). Rename also genrand_int32() to genrand_uint32(), since it returns an unsigned 32-bit integer, not a signed integer. The _random module is now built with Py_BUILD_CORE_MODULE defined.

* bpo-38075: Port _randommodule.c to PEP-384 (GH-15798)Dino Viehland2019-09-131-57/+92
| | | | | | | | | | - Migrate `Random_Type` to `PyType_FromSpec` - To simulate an old use of `PyLong_Type.tp_as_number->nb_absolute`, I added code to the module init function to stash `int.__abs__` for later use. Ideally we'd use `PyType_GetSlot()` instead, but it doesn't currently work for static types in CPython, and implementing it just for this case doesn't seem worth it. - Do exact check for long and dispatch to PyNumber_Absolute, use vector call when not exact.
