* gh-124872: Replace enter/exit events with "switched" (#125532)Kirill Podoprigora2024-10-161-10/+21
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Users want to know when the current context switches to a different context object. Right now this happens when and only when a context is entered or exited, so the enter and exit events are synonymous with "switched". However, if the changes proposed for gh-99633 are implemented, the current context will also switch for reasons other than context enter or exit. Since users actually care about context switches and not enter or exit, replace the enter and exit events with a single switched event. The former exit event was emitted just before exiting the context. The new switched event is emitted after the context is exited to match the semantics users expect of an event with a past-tense name. If users need the ability to clean up before the switch takes effect, another event type can be added in the future. It is not added here because YAGNI. I skipped 0 in the enum as a matter of practice. Skipping 0 makes it easier to troubleshoot when code forgets to set zeroed memory, and it aligns with best practices for other tools (e.g., https://protobuf.dev/programming-guides/dos-donts/#unspecified-enum). * gh-100240: Use a consistent implementation for freelists (#121934)Sam Gross2024-07-221-55/+4
| | | | | | | | This combines and updates our freelist handling to use a consistent implementation. Objects in the freelist are linked together using the first word of memory block. If configured with freelists disabled, these operations are essentially no-ops.

* gh-94673: Hide Objects in PyTypeObject Behind Accessors (gh-104074)Eric Snow2023-05-021-1/+1
| | | This makes it much cleaner to move more PyTypeObject fields to PyInterpreterState.
* gh-81057: Move contextvars-related Globals to _PyRuntimeState (gh-99400)Eric Snow2022-11-161-24/+14
| | | | | This is part of the effort to consolidate global variables, to make them easier to manage (and make it easier to later move some of them to PyInterpreterState). https://github.com/python/cpython/issues/81057
* gh-99300: Use Py_NewRef() in Python/ directory (#99317)Victor Stinner2022-11-101-28/+14
| | | | | | Replace Py_INCREF() and Py_XINCREF() with Py_NewRef() and Py_XNewRef() in C files of the Python/ directory. Update Parser/asdl_c.py to regenerate Python/Python-ast.c.
* Add more stats for freelist use and allocations. (GH-92211)Mark Shannon2022-05-031-0/+2

* bpo-47164: Add _PyCFunction_CAST() macro (GH-32192)Victor Stinner2022-03-311-1/+1
| | | Use the macro in C files of the Python/ directory.
* bpo-46417: Clear more static types (GH-30796)Victor Stinner2022-01-221-16/+3
| | | | | | | * Move PyContext static types into object.c static_types list. * Rename PyContextTokenMissing_Type to _PyContextTokenMissing_Type and declare it in pycore_context.h. * _PyHamtItems types are no long exported: replace PyAPI_DATA() with extern.
* bpo-46008: Make runtime-global object/type lifecycle functions and state ↵Eric Snow2021-12-091-8/+14
| | | | | | | | | | | | consistent. (gh-29998) This change is strictly renames and moving code around. It helps in the following ways: * ensures type-related init functions focus strictly on one of the three aspects (state, objects, types) * passes in PyInterpreterState * to all those functions, simplifying work on moving types/objects/state to the interpreter * consistent naming conventions help make what's going on more clear * keeping API related to a type in the corresponding header file makes it more obvious where to look for it https://bugs.python.org/issue46008
* bpo-45522: Allow to disable freelists on build time (GH-29056)Christian Heimes2021-10-211-8/+15
| | | | | | | | Freelists for object structs can now be disabled. A new ``configure`` option ``--without-freelists`` can be used to disable all freelists except empty tuple singleton. Internal Py*_MAXFREELIST macros can now be defined as 0 without causing compiler warnings and segfaults. Signed-off-by: Christian Heimes <christian@python.org>
* bpo-45439: Move _PyObject_VectorcallTstate() to pycore_call.h (GH-28893)Victor Stinner2021-10-141-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | * Move _PyObject_VectorcallTstate() and _PyObject_FastCallTstate() to pycore_call.h (internal C API). * Convert PyObject_CallOneArg(), PyObject_Vectorcall(), _PyObject_FastCall() and PyVectorcall_Function() static inline functions to regular functions. * Add _PyVectorcall_FunctionInline() static inline function. * PyObject_Vectorcall(), _PyObject_FastCall(), and PyObject_CallOneArg() now call _PyThreadState_GET() rather than PyThreadState_Get().
* pycore_pystate.h no longer redefines PyThreadState_GET() (GH-28921)Victor Stinner2021-10-131-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Redefining the PyThreadState_GET() macro in pycore_pystate.h is useless since it doesn't affect files not including it. Either use _PyThreadState_GET() directly, or don't use pycore_pystate.h internal C API. For example, the _testcapi extension don't use the internal C API, but use the public PyThreadState_Get() function instead. Replace PyThreadState_Get() with _PyThreadState_GET(). The _PyThreadState_GET() macro is more efficient than PyThreadState_Get() and PyThreadState_GET() function calls which call fail with a fatal Python error. posixmodule.c and _ctypes extension now include <windows.h> before pycore header files (like pycore_call.h). _PyTraceback_Add() now uses _PyErr_Fetch()/_PyErr_Restore() instead of PyErr_Fetch()/PyErr_Restore(). The _decimal and _xxsubinterpreters extensions are now built with the Py_BUILD_CORE_MODULE macro defined to get access to the internal C API.
* Clean up initialization __class_getitem__ with Py_GenericAlias. (GH-28450)Serhiy Storchaka2021-09-191-2/+2
| | | | | The cast to PyCFunction is redundant. Overuse of redundant casts can hide actual bugs.
* bpo-43268: Pass interp rather than tstate to internal functions (GH-24580)Victor Stinner2021-02-191-6/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Pass the current interpreter (interp) rather than the current Python thread state (tstate) to internal functions which only use the interpreter. Modified functions: * _PyXXX_Fini() and _PyXXX_ClearFreeList() functions * _PyEval_SignalAsyncExc(), make_pending_calls() * _PySys_GetObject(), sys_set_object(), sys_set_object_id(), sys_set_object_str() * should_audit(), set_flags_from_config(), make_flags() * _PyAtExit_Call() * init_stdio_encoding() * etc.
* bpo-43268: _Py_IsMainInterpreter() now expects interp (GH-24577)Victor Stinner2021-02-191-1/+1
| | | | The _Py_IsMainInterpreter() function now expects interp rather than tstate.
* bpo-1635741: _contextvars uses PyModule_AddType() (GH-23147)Victor Stinner2020-11-041-3/+3
| | | | | | Replace PyModule_AddObject() with PyModule_AddType() in the _contextvars module (Python-ast.c). Add also the module name to _contextvars types name.
* bpo-40521: Fix _PyContext_Fini() (GH-21103)Victor Stinner2020-06-241-1/+3
| | | Only clear _token_missing in the main interpreter.
* bpo-40521: Cleanup code of free lists (GH-21082)Victor Stinner2020-06-231-4/+10
| | | Add get_xxx_state() function to factorize duplicated code.
* bpo-40887: Don't use finalized free lists (GH-20700)Victor Stinner2020-06-081-0/+12
| | | | | | In debug mode, ensure that free lists are no longer used after being finalized. Set numfree to -1 in finalization functions (eg. _PyList_Fini()), and then check that numfree is not equal to -1 before using a free list (e.g list_dealloc()).
* bpo-40521: Make context free list per-interpreter (GH-20644)Victor Stinner2020-06-051-16/+19
| | | | | | | | | Each interpreter now has its own context free list: * Move context free list into PyInterpreterState. * Add _Py_context_state structure. * Add tstate parameter to _PyContext_ClearFreeList() and _PyContext_Fini(). * Pass tstate to clear_freelists().
* bpo-40428: Remove PyTuple_ClearFreeList() function (GH-19769)Victor Stinner2020-04-291-8/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Remove the following function from the C API: * PyAsyncGen_ClearFreeLists() * PyContext_ClearFreeList() * PyDict_ClearFreeList() * PyFloat_ClearFreeList() * PyFrame_ClearFreeList() * PyList_ClearFreeList() * PySet_ClearFreeList() * PyTuple_ClearFreeList() Make these functions private, move them to the internal C API and change their return type to void. Call explicitly PyGC_Collect() to free all free lists. Note: PySet_ClearFreeList() did nothing.
* bpo-40268: Remove unused structmember.h includes (GH-19530)Victor Stinner2020-04-151-1/+1
| | | | | | If only offsetof() is needed: include stddef.h instead. When structmember.h is used, add a comment explaining that PyMemberDef is used.
