* #2630: Implement PEP 3138.Georg Brandl2008-06-111-1/+1
| | | | | | | The repr() of a string now contains printable Unicode characters unescaped. The new ascii() builtin can be used to get a repr() with only ASCII characters in it. PEP and patch were written by Atsuo Ishimoto.
* Issue 1342: Python could not start if installed in a directoryAmaury Forgeot d'Arc2008-06-111-1/+1
| | | | | | | | with non-ascii characters. This is the simple fix, which uses the FileSystemEncoding. Replacing all the char* with unicode strings is a major rewrite, and needs more thinking.
* Implement PEP 3121: new module initialization and finalization API.Martin v. Löwis2008-06-111-4/+2
|
* Move the codec decode type checks to bytes/bytearray.decode().Marc-André Lemburg2008-06-061-8/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | Use faster PyUnicode_FromEncodedObject() for bytes/bytearray.decode(). Add new PyCodec_KnownEncoding() API. Add new PyUnicode_AsDecodedUnicode() and PyUnicode_AsEncodedUnicode() APIs. Add missing PyUnicode_AsDecodedObject() to unicodeobject.h Fix punicode codec to also work on memoryviews.
* Fix uninitialized variable access, release memory.Martin v. Löwis2008-06-021-0/+3

* Issue2297: Fix a stack overflow in Windows caused by -v and -vv. When ↵Trent Nelson2008-03-191-3/+17
| | | | | | python is invoked with -v or -vv under Windows, the process of importing the codec for sys.stderr causes a message to be written to stderr, which in turn causes the codec to be recursively imported. Sometimes the stack overflow exception is swallowed, other times it is not. The bug depends on the particular locale settings of the Windows machine. Kudos to Douglas Greiman for reporting the issue and providing a patch and test case.

* Partial fix for bug #1306Christian Heimes2007-11-301-0/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Multiple reinitializations of Python 3.0 failed on a system without a hardcoded default fs encoding. The patch makes sure that the default fs encoding is freed and reset to NULL on e.g. Linux. I've also taken the liberty to increase the debugging in Objects/object.c:_Py_ForgetReference(). The method is used to validate the reference chain. Reinitialization still fails in the 3rd round of my test suite: * ob object : <refcnt 0 at 0x821c840> type : str refcount: 0 address : 0x821c840 * op->_ob_prev->_ob_next object : <refcnt 0 at 0x821c840> type : str refcount: 0 address : 0x821c840 * op->_ob_next->_ob_prev object : bytearray(b'') type : bytearray refcount: 1 address : 0x826b838 Fatal Python error: UNREF invalid object

* Fix for #1415 pythonw.exe fails because std streams a missingChristian Heimes2007-11-131-12/+49
| | | | | | After a long discussion about the problem with Windows GUI apps Guido decided that sys.stdin, stdout and stderr should be None when the C runtime library returns invalid file descriptors for the standard streams. So far the only known cases are Windows GUI apps and scripts started with pythonw on Windows. The OS restrictions are tight enough to catch the problem on other OSes.
* Merging the py3k-pep3137 branch back into the py3k branch.Guido van Rossum2007-11-061-4/+28
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | No detailed change log; just check out the change log for the py3k-pep3137 branch. The most obvious changes: - str8 renamed to bytes (PyString at the C level); - bytes renamed to buffer (PyBytes at the C level); - PyString and PyUnicode are no longer compatible. I.e. we now have an immutable bytes type and a mutable bytes type. The behavior of PyString was modified quite a bit, to make it more bytes-like. Some changes are still on the to-do list.
* Patch 1352 (continued in issue 1329) by Christian Heimes.Guido van Rossum2007-10-301-1/+8
| | | | | | Before sys.stderr is set to the proper thing, set it to a really simple file-like object that can print tracebacks using direct file descriptor I/O. This is handy for debugging.
* Patch 1329 (partial) by Christian Heimes.Guido van Rossum2007-10-301-4/+4
| | | | | | | | Add a closefd flag to open() which can be set to False to prevent closing the file descriptor when close() is called or when the object is destroyed. Useful to ensure that sys.std{in,out,err} keep their file descriptors open when Python is uninitialized. (This was always a feature in 2.x, it just wasn't implemented in 3.0 yet.)
* Issue 1267, continued.Guido van Rossum2007-10-221-3/+3
| | | | | | Additional patch by Christian Heimes to deal more cleanly with the FILE* vs file-descriptor issues. I cleaned up his code a bit, and moved the lseek() call into import.c.
* Patch 1267 by Christian Heimes.Guido van Rossum2007-10-191-2/+84
| | | | | | Move the initialization of sys.std{in,out,err} and __builtin__.open to C code. This solves the problem that "python -S" wouldn't work.
* Patch #1272, by Christian Heimes and Alexandre Vassalotti.Guido van Rossum2007-10-151-1/+2
| | | | | | | | | | Changes to make __file__ a proper Unicode object, using the default filesystem encoding. This is a bit tricky because the default filesystem encoding isn't set by the time we import the first modules; at that point we fudge things a bit. This is okay since __file__ isn't really used much except for error reporting. Tested on OSX and Linux only so far.
* get rid of some more PyString uses.Guido van Rossum2007-10-101-15/+19
| | | | | Only the filename is still a PyString now. (We'll need to deal with the default filesystem encoding to do it right.)
