The main io module now uses the C implementation. The Python one still exists
in Lib/_pyio.py for ease of testing new features and usefulness to other
implementers.
The rewrite was done by Antoine Pitrou and Amaury Forgeot d'Arc. I was slightly
helpful at the end. :)
Following are the log messages from the io-c branch:

patch from Antoine Pitrou #3112

The repr() of a string now contains printable Unicode characters unescaped.
The new ascii() builtin can be used to get a repr() with only ASCII characters in it.
PEP and patch were written by Atsuo Ishimoto.

This is the simple fix, which uses the FileSystemEncoding.
Replacing all the char* with unicode strings is a major rewrite,

Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C. This allows for usage of the
'warnings' code in places where it was previously not possible (e.g., the
parser). It could also potentially lead to a speed-up in interpreter start-up

Python version in key places.

This happens when sys.stdout is redirected to something that cannot flush().
the flush_io() function must be exception-neutral: don't raise, and don't clear exceptions.
Next step: exec() is not supposed to flush sys.stdout...

Patch #2477: Added from __future__ import unicode_literals
The new PyParser_*Ex() functions are based on Neal's suggestion and initial patch. The new __future__ feature makes all '' and r'' unicode strings. b'' and br'' stay (byte) strings.

python is invoked with -v or -vv under Windows, the process of importing the codec for sys.stderr causes a message to be written to stderr, which in turn causes the codec to be recursively imported. Sometimes the stack overflow exception is swallowed, other times it is not. The bug depends on the particular locale settings of the Windows machine.
Kudos to Douglas Greiman for reporting the issue and providing a patch and test case.
