[svn-r7347] Purpose:
Code cleanup & bug fix
Description:
Clean up code, adding error checking where appropriate
Fix a number of routines which were clearing the default error stack
before checking some information about that stack.
Set the version # of the library correctly when it is registered.
Platforms tested:
FreeBSD 4.8 (sleipnir)
