[svn-r16418] Description:
Bring r16417 from trunk to 1.8 branch:
Bring closer to standard standalone test format, add checks for using
the latest file format and close dataset ID leaked.
Tested on:
FreeBSD/32 6.3 (duty)
(too minor to require h5committest)
