* [svn-r13143] Refactoring.James Laird2007-01-161-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Added can_share callback for OH messages. This determines whether the message is allowed to be shared in the heap (committed and immutable datatypes can't be). Fixed a bug in the dense attribute storage that tried to open the shared message heap when it hadn't been created yet. Made the test to extend shared dataspace messages a bit more robust. Refactored the code the searches a shared message list index to be a little more efficient. A few other minor changes. Tested on smirom, kagiso, Windows, and juniper.
* [svn-r13135] Continuing code cleanup.James Laird2007-01-111-6/+1
| | | | | | | | | Moved SOHM table version out of table encoding and completely into superblock. This is a file format change. Added test that extends shared dataspaces. Dynamically allocate arrays in shared message cache code. Clean up comments. Tested on windows, kagiso, smirom.

* [svn-r13079] Description:Quincey Koziol2006-12-191-2/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add more tests for checking that writing to shared attributes works correctly. (Looks like it still has a bug when dense storage is used, which I'll correct shortly). Add testing routine to shared message code, to retrieve reference count for a shared message. Add fractal heap 'op' callback for efficiently computing the hash value of an existing encoded message in the shared message fractal heap. Various minor cleanups and warning placations. Tested on: Linux/32 2.6 (chicago) Linux/64 2.6 (chicago2)
* [svn-r13074] Description:Quincey Koziol2006-12-191-4/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add support for opening attributes in dense and/or shared storage by index. Move routines for building and operating on tables of attributes into separate source module. Fix bug where reverting from "dense" to "compact" storage would 'unshare' attributes. Minor code cleanups, etc. Tested on: Linux/32 2.6 (chicago) Linux/64 2.6 (chicago2)
* [svn-r13065] Added support for copying shared messages (including turning ↵James Laird2006-12-151-49/+85
| | | | | | | | | | | | unshared messages to shared messages and vice versa). Extended objcopy test to test all "permutations" of shared/unshared and new/old group format. If this proves to take a long time to test, I'll go back and have it run fewer tests when HDF5_TEST_EXPRESS is enabled. Tested on smirom, kagiso, copper, and Windows.
* [svn-r13058] Description:Quincey Koziol2006-12-131-37/+33
| | | | | | | | | | | Clean up some shared message operations and other minor tweaks, in the process of trying to solve the messy way that shared object header messages are implemented in general (not James' work - which is fine :-) Tested on: Mac OS X/32 10.4.8 (amazon) FreeBSD/32 4.11 (sleipnir) AIX/32 5.? (copper)
* [svn-r13045] Description:Quincey Koziol2006-12-121-5/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Switch from using H5L_index_t/H5L_INDEX_<foo> to H5_index_t/H5_INDEX_<foo> in order to accommodate indices on aspects of attributes as well as links. Add basic support for deleting attributes in dense storage (needs more support/tests for shared attributes in dense storage still). Misc. cleanups, etc. Tested on: Linux/32 2.6 (chicago) Linux/64 2.6 (chicago2)

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add first pass of "dense" attribute storage to objects. Lots of parts of this are stubbed out, but all the tests are passing and I'll work on the corner cases soon. Eliminated several unused parameters from object header message callback routines. Other, miscellaneous code cleanups, etc. (and probably some things I've forgotten about... :-) Tested on: FreeBSD/32 4.11 (sleipnir) Linux/32 2.4 (heping) AIX/32 5.? (copper)

| | | | | | | | | | | | Fix problem with copying objects when the dataset to copy has an "older" version of the layout message and needs to compute the size of the dataset's storage after the dataspace information is available. Minor random cleanups also... Tested on: FreeBSD/32 4.11 (sleipnir) Too minor/weird to test w/h5committest...
* [svn-r12902] Checkin of Shared Object Header Message work.James Laird2006-11-131-25/+223
| | | | | | | | | | | | This feature is still in progress; Shared Object Header Messages are not complete as a feature and are not thoroughly tested. There are still "TODO" comments in the code (comments with the word "JAMES" in them, so as not to be confused with other TODO comments). Hopefully this checkin will reduce the liklihood of conflicts as I finish implementing this feature. All current tests pass on juniper, copper (parallel), heping, kagiso, and mir.

* [svn-r12528] Added User-Defined links to the library.James Laird2006-08-021-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Users can create external links using H5L_create_external(). These links point to an object in another HDF5 file. Users can alter the behavior of external links or create new kinds of links by registering callbacks using the H5L interface. Added tests, tools support, etc. Also a number of other, minor changes have been made (some restructuring of the H5L interface, for instance). Additional documentation and examples are forthcoming.

Bug fix on the H5T_vlen_set_loc to allow for changing the file on a variable-length datatype on disk. Platforms tested: FreeBSD 4.11 (sleipnir) Linux 2.4 Can't h5committest right now, due to missing cache files.
* [svn-r11850] Purpose:James Laird2006-01-021-19/+57
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Feature Description: Added character encoding and attribute creation property lists. Solution: Attributes' character encoding is set via the ACPL. The default is ASCII, with UTF-8 being the other option currently. Platforms tested: heping, mir, sleipnir, copper
* [svn-r11758] Purpose:Quincey Koziol2005-12-041-14/+15
| | | | | | | | | | | | | New feature Description: Add in a combination of Peter's & my code to support copying variable-length data from one file to another, although currently only supported with contiguous data storage. Platforms tested: FreeBSD 4.11 (sleipnir) h5committest
* [svn-r11712] Purpose:Quincey Koziol2005-11-151-23/+24
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | New feature Description: Check in baseline for compact group revisions, which radically revises the source code for managing groups and object headers. WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! This initiates the "unstable" phase of the 1.7.x branch, leading up to the 1.8.0 release. Please test this code, but do _NOT_ keep files created with it - the format will change again before the release and you will not be able to read your old files!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! Solution: There's too many changes to really describe them all, but some of them include: - Stop abusing the H5G_entry_t structure and split it into two separate structures for non-symbol table node use within the library: H5O_loc_t for object locations in a file and H5G_name_t to store the path to an opened object. H5G_entry_t is now only used for storing symbol table entries on disk. - Retire H5G_namei() in favor of a more general mechanism for traversing group paths and issuing callbacks on objects located. This gets us out of the business of hacking H5G_namei() for new features, generally. - Revised H5O* routines to take a H5O_loc_t instead of H5G_entry_t - Lots more... Platforms tested: h5committested and maybe another dozen configurations.... :-)
* [svn-r11686] Purpose:Quincey Koziol2005-11-071-7/+94
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | New feature Description: Add in baseline "object copy" code from Peter [in the form of a new API routine: H5Gcopy()]. There's still some work to do (like handling variable- length datatypes and possibly support for references) and it hasn't been tested on mounted files yet, but the core functionality is there and working correctly. I've also got a set of patches to update the 1.6 branch with tweaks to keep the branches mostly in sync, but Elena will kill me if I import them before the 1.6.5 release is out... :-) Platforms tested: FreeBSD 4.11 (sleipnir) h5committested
* [svn-r11384] Purpose:Quincey Koziol2005-09-121-5/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Code cleanup Description: Merge back changes from "compact group" work that improve the infrastructure of the library and may impact others. In this round of merging, that includes: - Move datatype allocation into single internal routine, instead of duplicated code that was spread out in a dozen or so places. - Clean up guts of object header routines (H5O_*) to allow for some of the fancieroperations that need to be performed on groups, along with some general improvements. - Added a new error code - Some minor cleanups in other code.... Platforms tested: FreeBSD 4.11 (sleipnir) Linux 2.4 Mac OS X
* [svn-r11245] Purpose:Quincey Koziol2005-08-131-11/+11
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Code cleanup Description: Trim trailing whitespace, which is making 'diff'ing the two branches difficult. Solution: Ran this script in each directory: foreach f (*.[ch] *.cpp) sed 's/[[:blank:]]*$//' $f > sed.out && mv sed.out $f end Platforms tested: FreeBSD 4.11 (sleipnir) Too minor to require h5committest

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Bug Fix/Code Cleanup/Doc Cleanup/Optimization/Branch Sync :-) Description: Generally speaking, this is the "signed->unsigned" change to selections. However, in the process of merging code back, things got stickier and stickier until I ended up doing a big "sync the two branches up" operation. So... I brought back all the "infrastructure" fixes from the development branch to the release branch (which I think were actually making some improvement in performance) as well as fixed several bugs which had been fixed in one branch, but not the other. I've also tagged the repository before making this checkin with the label "before_signed_unsigned_changes". Platforms tested: FreeBSD 4.10 (sleipnir) w/parallel & fphdf5 FreeBSD 4.10 (sleipnir) w/threadsafe FreeBSD 4.10 (sleipnir) w/backward compatibility Solaris 2.7 (arabica) w/"purify options" Solaris 2.8 (sol) w/FORTRAN & C++ AIX 5.x (copper) w/parallel & FORTRAN IRIX64 6.5 (modi4) w/FORTRAN Linux 2.4 (heping) w/FORTRAN & C++ Misc. update:
* [svn-r9559] Purpose:Quincey Koziol2004-11-221-1/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | Code optimization Description: Switch a few more malloc/free pairs over to using internal free list code, to avoid abusing system memory allocator as badly. Platforms tested: FreeBSD 4.10 (sleipnir) w/parallel Solaris 2.7 (arabica) Too minor to require h5committest
* [svn-r9556] Purpose:Quincey Koziol2004-11-221-5/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Code cleanup & optimization Description: Improve ADF/CGNS benchmark by reducing the number of internal attribute copies made during creations, opens and writes. Added new H5O_iterate() routine for iterating through messages of a certain type in the object header (attributes are the only message currently that can have multiple instances in the object header). Cross-pollinated various minor code cleanups to reduce diffs between branches. Platforms tested: FreeBSD 4.10 (sleipnir) w/parallel Solaris 2.7 (arabica) Too minor to require h5committest
* [svn-r9552] Purpose:Quincey Koziol2004-11-191-8/+30
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Code optimization Description: Avoid making as many copies of attribute information. Also, be smarter about which properties we've seen before when copying and closing property lists. Fix memory leak of attribute data structures. Platforms tested: FreeBSD 4.10 (sleipnir) w/parallel Solaris 2.7 (arabica) Too minor to require h5committest
* [svn-r9537] Purpose:Quincey Koziol2004-11-171-17/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Code cleanup & optimizations Description: Clean up some of the code in attributes to avoid allocating memory and performing type conversions when the conversion is a noop. Avoid memory allocations of attribute data structures by switching to use library's free list memory allocator routines. Avoid memory allocations of object header continuation data structures by switching to use library's free list memory allocator routines. Rearrange threaded, balanced binary tree macros slightly to avoid some overhead. Platforms tested: FreeBSD 4.10 (sleipnir) w/parallel Solaris 2.7 (arabica) Too minor to require h5committest
* [svn-r9433] Purpose:Quincey Koziol2004-10-191-1/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Bug fix Description: Fix core dump when flushing a file with a newly created attribute which hasn't had a value written to it still open. Solution: Write the attribute fill value when appropriate. Platforms tested: FreeBSd 4.10 (sleipnir) Linux 2.4 (verbena) Solaris 2.7 (arabica)
* [svn-r8731] Purpose:Quincey Koziol2004-06-231-13/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Code cleanup & minor optimization Description: Re-work the way interface initialization routines are specified in the library to avoid the overhead of checking for them in routines where there is no interface initialization routine. This cleans up warnings with gcc 3.4, reduces the library binary size a bit (about 2-3%) and should speedup the library's execution slightly. Platforms tested: FreeBSD 4.10 (sleipnir) w/gcc34 h5committest
* [svn-r8673] Purpose:Quincey Koziol2004-06-131-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Code optimization Description: Revised dataspace selections to use a more "object oriented" mechanism to set the function pointers for each selection and selection iterator. This reduces the amount and number of times that dataspace selection info has to be copied. Additionally, change hyperslab selection information to be dynamically allocated instead of an inline struct. Platforms tested: Solaris 2.7 (arabica) FreeBSD 4.10 (sleipnir) w/parallel Too minor to require h5committest
* [svn-r8590] Purpose:Quincey Koziol2004-05-271-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Code optimization & bug fix Description: When dimension information is being stored in the storage layout message on disk, it is stored as 32-bit quantities, possibly truncating the dimension information, if a dimension is greater than 32-bits in size. Solution: Fix the storage layout message problem by revising file format to not store dimension information, since it is already available in the dataspace. Also revise the storage layout data structures to be more compartmentalized for the information for contiguous, chunked and compact storage. Platforms tested: FreeBSD 4.9 (sleipnir) w/parallel Solaris 2.7 (arabica) h5committest
* [svn-r8376] Purpose:Quincey Koziol2004-04-171-40/+11
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Code cleanup Description: Update null dataspace changes to try to write older version of dataspace information whenever possible. Refactor common code to only one location. Allow I/O operations to succeed on null dataspaces. Platforms tested: FreeBSD 4.9 (sleipnir) h5committest
* [svn-r8330] Purpose: Last step of check-in for Null dataspaceRaymond Lu2004-04-081-28/+55
| | | | | | | | | | | Description: Mainly are header message changes for dataspace. In last round of check-in, a new header message for dataspace to created, which is not a good way. Now, there will be no new message for dataspace, but just add the type of dataspace in the message while increment its version number. Backward compatibility is addressed. The attribute design is modified accordingly. Platforms tested: h5committest
