Switch v1 B-tree nodes from using previous cache to use the new journaling
cache code. This is a major switch for the cache callbacks.
Switched the metadata caching code from having a pointer to the file it's
in to receiving a pointer to the file, when needed. This was necessary in
order to avoid crashing when two files IDs were open on the same underlying
file and one of those files was closed with cache entries using the file
pointers. Also took out the check in the caching code for reading off the
end of the file, which didn't play nicely with the multi-file VFD.
Switching the cache from having a pointer internally to requiring one
externally meant tweaking almost all the test code. :-/
Added correct exit codes to cache2 tests that didn't have them already,
so the 'make check' will stop when they fail.
Use the path to the h5diff in this build in the tools/h5recover testing
script, since we can't guarantee a user has HDF5 already installed.
Assorted minor tweaks to get everything to compile more cleanly and pass
all the tests (on my Mac :-).
Tested on:
Mac OS X (10.5.2) w/C++
(more testing coming up shortly, I just didn't have my "rsync testbed" set
up for this branch when I started making changes to the code)

Remove --enable-hdfv1_6 configure flag, now that all dependencies on it
have been removed and new --with-default-api-version=[v16|v18] and
--disable-deprecated-symbols flags have taken its place.
Update types in bin/trace so that bin/reconfigure runs cleanly.
Run bin/reconfigure to regenerate configure script, along with
other associated files, etc.

Bug fixes
Reset external file list slots name_offset to a state when created (0) in H5P_dcrt_copy
so that it conforms to an assertion in H5D_update_entry_info that assumes the name_offset is 0 at this point
this fixes the problem of h5repack and external files, add a new test and files for an external file
h5diff, check for an error return in H5D_get_storage_size

running on kagiso.
The static szip libraries are working as intended, but when shared szip
libraries are present and intended for use they cannot be opened. A check
has been implemented to test if shared szip libraries are functional on
current platform. If they are not, and the user is trying to use them,
szip is now disbaled and the user is informed.
This issue occurs on kagiso, and the resolution was tested on kagiso.

Configure feature
Description:
Added 'make trace' target.
Solution:
Added tracing to 1.7. This was done automatically in 1.6, but left out
of 1.7 until now (oops!).
Tracing in 1.7 only happens manually, when the user types 'make trace.'
Tracing automatically requires more framework than it's worth.
I also fixed a couple of tracing bugs and ran trace.

Description: H5T_register() replaces any existing data conversion path
with a new path.
Solution: Added a parameter to H5T_register() and H5T_path_find() to
signal the library whether the new conversion path is from API function
H5Tregister() or from private function like H5T_init_interface(). If it
is from H5Tregister(), replace existing path. If it's from H5T_init_interface()
and the library is trying to register default hard conversion functions,
don't replace existing path because the path is registered by the library.
For example, the library registered H5T_conv_int_float() and is trying to
register H5T_conv_long_float(). The size of long is equal to int. There's
no need to replace the path H5T_conv_int_float().

Bug Fix/Code Cleanup/Doc Cleanup/Optimization/Branch Sync :-)
Description:
Generally speaking, this is the "signed->unsigned" change to selections.
However, in the process of merging code back, things got stickier and stickier
until I ended up doing a big "sync the two branches up" operation. So... I
brought back all the "infrastructure" fixes from the development branch to the
release branch (which I think were actually making some improvement in
performance) as well as fixed several bugs which had been fixed in one branch,
but not the other.
I've also tagged the repository before making this checkin with the label
"before_signed_unsigned_changes".

performance.
Description:
Replaced the old metadata cache with a cache with a modified LRU
replacement policy. This should improve the hit rate.
Solution:
Since we want to flush cache entries in increasing address order, I
used the threaded binary B-tree code to store the cache entries.
There is a fair bit of overhead here, so we may want to consider
other options.
While the code is designed to allow the support of other replacement
algorithms, at present, only a modified version of LRU is supported.
The modified LRU algorithm requires that a user selectable portion
of the cache entries be clean. The clean entries are evicted first
when writes are not permitted. If the pool of clean entries is used
up, the cache grows beyond its user specified maximum size. The
cache can also exceed its maximum size if the combined size of the
protected (or locked) entries exceeds the maximum size of the cache.

Code optimization & bug fix
Description:
When dimension information is being stored in the storage layout message
on disk, it is stored as 32-bit quantities, possibly truncating the dimension
information, if a dimension is greater than 32-bits in size.
Solution:
Fix the storage layout message problem by revising file format to not store
dimension information, since it is already available in the dataspace.
Also revise the storage layout data structures to be more compartmentalized
for the information for contiguous, chunked and compact storage.

Code cleanup/optimization
Description:
Query property list values once, at the beginning of the I/O routines,
instead of querying the property list values multiple (lots!) of times in
lower level routines.
Solution:
Create "property list caches" for internal library queries of the property
list values.
